What is Ethnic Studies? Ethnic studies is an interdisciplinary minor that examines identity, language, family, spiritual, history, religious and cultural practices, economics, legal issues, politics, and values across diverse populations in the United States. These populations include, but are not limited to, African-Americans, Asian Americans, Latinos/as/ Hispanics, and Native Americans. Declaration of Ethnic Studies Minor
Goals of the Minor: 1.) Develop knowledge and understanding of multi-ethnic peoples and cultures, and the contributions to society 2.) Understand the historical and contemporary contexts of ethnic and racial oppression as well as other experiences of marginalization 3.) Examine the intersections of race, ethnicity, and the construction of identity 4.) Apply theoretical knowledge to the development of multicultural understanding 5.)Explore the complex, dynamic relations between institutional, historical, social, and cultural forces and individuals in marginalized groups 6.) Understand the heterogeneity and complexity of discourses and experiences of historically marginalized peoples 7.)Develop multicultural competence for lifelong learning
